“Basically, one cannot live by his own without affecting the lives of others.”
Yah right! The statement is quite true and synonymous to the quote “No man is an island”. The island referred here is the people influencing one another; it may be for bad or for good ends. Similarly, in one of the greatest story I have known, since I am fond of it, was when our RS teacher told our class how Adan and Eve fell to the devil’s alluring promises wherein in the final analysis it was a deception that soaked man into sin. Distinctively, the story propels the viewer, which definitely includes me, how Andy’s desire slowly achieved even though harsh experiences with her boss, Miranda occurred along her way to work success. But despite that, she eventually leaves her alluring job in exchange of personal happiness. I have also a strong feeling that Andy, like the other college graduates are, wants to aspire to land in a good and well-satisfying job, and fulfills their long-awaited dreams in life since for some, people work due to several indispensable reasons. For them, it’s an obligatory drive that brings social rewards, financial stability, feeling of belongingness to a group, sense of identity and status; and to some extent it provides opportunities to form friendships and may somehow prevent one from being lonely, taking away boredom out of the reality of life’s pressure and inadequacies.
Her story though is one of the many exemplars of hope despite the overwhelming challenges one may have encountered. The story starts when Andrea, whose greatest dream is to become a journalist, lands in a Runway magazine as the editor in chief’s assistant. Miranda, her cruel and merciless boss makes the aspiring assistant a living hell experience. The environment in the place was cold and extremely critical with the physical appearance. The girl will have to change her simple and plain style, for a more trendy and elegant one, in order to gain the acceptance of her ruthless boss and colleagues, specially Emily, her unpleasant workmate. Despite everything against Andrea in the office, she considered the experience as a challenge, drastically changing her clothes and self-image, with the help of Nigel, the magazine's art director. Nevertheless, the job becomes extremely demanding, because of Miranda's tough work rhythm and nearly impossible tasks, leaving Andrea without a private life with her boyfriend, family and friends. Later on, in the eyes of her boyfriend and friends, the old Andrea has gone, and becomes more preoccupied about her image and her future in the magazine. When Miranda demands that she obtain the next unpublished Harry Potter manuscript, you can sense that she is trying to force her to quit, but it makes the young woman dig in to please her boss. However, with her new appearance and the demands placed on her, she starts to lose her friends, family and her live-in boy friend. As she is whisked away to Paris with Miranda and faces the entire glamour that could be hers, including a flashy if not artificial freelance journalist, she is forced to make the decision of where she wants to be in her life. In the end, she quit the job realizing that what is important in life is whether you’re happy with what you are doing without compromising the relationships around.
Andy’s decision of quitting her job for personal happiness with friends and her boyfriend is a good and wise choice she made because it somehow made her boss realize the real essence of working with great interpersonal relationship around. That’s why, it is an immense task for human relations officer in the business sector that the company’s growth depends largely upon their relationships with others. Professionally, each person employed in a certain industry must have common goals in achieving company’s target objectives. In fact, those persons who are understanding, thoughtful, friendly, kind, and honest were the ones who gains positive approval form their work mates and bosses. These traits are most liked because they contribute to social harmony and add satisfaction to the workers inside the organization, unlike the workforce of Miranda where she builds a vast wall of extreme impersonalism. In which this impersonal environment tend to propel employees who are part in the work success to ignite employee and employers conflict due to absenteeism or behavioral problems. This motivating process, if it’s really her motivating strategy, is an internal cause of problems in the workplace. While other external causes like creation of unions and intervening associations like the customers, suppliers, competitive firms, stockholders and the community itself may interfere to the conflict inside the organization. At some degree of my realization, the invariable result of the bad working relationship will increase turnovers for the company, causing the raise of monetary fund for hiring, placement procedures, marketing scheme to hire new employees and additional training funds will likely ensue. In the like manner, the business sector where people come and go for work has greatly influence the employees’ behaviors. It was evident when Andy’s live-in partner noticed her abrupt changes in lifestyles including the clothes she wears and the unpredictable working habits just to fulfill the boss’ request. In effect, she loose her grip over friendships and . It shapes ones understanding to the certain problems faced in their daily activities, and it impacts the way workers react and feel. Gilmer (1966) stressed that affective factors (emotions) can significantly influence work outcomes. It’s like a domino effect, “It cannot benefit one without benefiting the others” wherein I for one experience how important the harsh experience at work to the present job I am dealing with. It serves as an illumination to every decision one must take because those experiences can became a beneficial source of understanding and inspiration.
My first down experience at work happens during my early adulthood. I was only running 19 when I became a crew of a fast food chain. I recalled a few but embarrassing moment of my life when my supervisor called my attention due to the delays of products I have served. He bluntly expressed annoying words in front of the customers. Even though I realized that it was my fault because of my clumsy behaviors, I felt down and unhappy of my work experience, lowering my self-image and confidence with other people. Eventually resigned from that job, only to find out that I could not be in that line of work. I figured it out that I was just forced to grab the job due to financial reasons disregarding my own interest in supervisory works I’ve supposed to work. While finishing my undergraduate studies, I was fortunate to be given a chance in a supervisory position where I became an efficient worker, so to speak. Hence, I appreciated the good things may realize after a bad work experience in which most of my is dealing with work performed by my subordinates, I have to ensure that they serve well, within the context of my supervision and sometimes, though I’ have tried not to do so, I have to apply disciplinary actions in order to maintain order in my department.
Today, I became more mature and think practically in the application my work. I should see to it that I can manage myself including how I divide my time at work, home and with social life. Work pressures, emotional problems, family life, and other associations must be balanced. Healthy living fostered more positive outcome than to gamble myself into a stressful lifestyles. Job happiness then is synonymous with personal happiness.
At the end of the day, I realized the meaning of true happiness, the same feeling when Andy wave goodbye to her boss in the post scene of the story. Her sweet smile took away the “devil” away from Miranda’s heart. It slowly soften and changed her perspective. After all, there’s no amount of glory one can achieve than by taking a road less traveled, saying “Whew! What a great day it has been”.
